Alamelu had only two words for me when I handed her a piece of my hot pancake. "Uppu? Karam?" "Salt? Spice?" Meaning, how can you eat this insipid stuff?
Everything is spicy here. In a place where even babies are fed chili peppers, they know no other way. Hence my frustration when I ask someone to please make the food less spicy, or not spicy. I've learned the hard way that "no spice at all" does not mean to me what it does to them. Then again, one does get used to it, and one does lose a few taste buds along the way.
