Snakes and Cows

Our days are fun, at least I think so, if a little monotonous, and the volunteers can get very excited about zoological diversions. Every few days we spot cows tramping through our fields. Having not grown up in Switzerland and having apparently never been in the proximity of a real live cow, some in our group find this highly entertaining.

And then a few days ago a long snake slithered out from under a rock in the square adjacent to ours.

This caused quite an attraction. Our Israeli associate director, Mordechai Aviam, at left, apparently used to work for the national park services and assured us the snake was not poisonous. Here he is rerouting it.

Then he told us a story about how he once brought a snake home for his son to play with. Then he put the snake in the bathtub, which he covered with a cloth, as he was planning on returning it to the wild the following day. He forgot to inform his wife. The next day he left at 4 am for an archaeological excavation and forgot about the snake. His wife took a shower and then, with water in her eyes, blindly reached for a folded towel, into which, yes, the snake had nestled.
